The Life of William Henry Hessenflow

"Obituary provided by Kenneth Roe; One of Johnson County's pioneer citizens, and one of its most highly respected citizens succumbed to an illness that had caused him much discomfort for some time, Thursday, July 23, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Aerial Moll. Mr. Hessenflow was seventy-nine years old.; Funeral services were conducted from the Olathe Methodist Church, Sunday afternoon, by Rev. Watson of the DeSoto Church, and burial was made in the Olathe cemetery.; ; William Henry Hessenflow, son of Mr & Mrs Henry Hessenflow, was born February 14, 1852 and died July 23, 1931, age 79 years, 5 months and 9 days. His mother died when he was a small child and his father was killed during the Civil War, leaving him to make his own living at the age of 11 years. He came to Kansas in 1867 and located in Jewell County, later moving to Johnson County. He joined the Methodist church at Bethel in 1892 and has always lived a Christian life. He was married to Georgeann Hawkins, and to that union was born three children, two boys dying in infancy. One daughter, Mrs Bertha Bash surviving. Mrs Hessenflow died August 27, 1882. On March 27, 1883, he was united in marriage with Mattie Louise Baird. To this union 5 children were born. Mrs Ariel Moll, Mrs Clara Barthol, Mrs Margaret Moll and Edward S. Hessenflow, all of Olathe and Rolland Hessenflow of Kansas City, MO. He was stricken with paralysis six years ago. His faithful wife, caring for him until her death December 7, 1929. He leaves to mourn his loss thoese chidren, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grand children, two brothers, Edward S. and James Hessenflow of Nebraska, besides a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the M.E. church at Olathe conducted by his pastor, Rev W.O. Watson."
