Duane L. Echternach, 64, died September 6, 2009 at his home in Anthony.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Anthony.
Funeral services will also be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at American Legion Hall Post 153 in Olathe, Kansas with burial following in Olathe Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials may be given to the Olathe American Legion or to the Anthony Masonic Lodge #200 A.F. & A.M.
Prairie Rose Funeral Homes, Inc., 602 E. Main St. ~ Anthony, KS 67003, is in charge of arrangements.
Duane Leroy Echternach, son of Luther D. and Elnor A. (York) Echternach, was born December 13, 1944 in Hastings, Nebraska.
After graduating from the Hastings High School, he joined the United States Navy April 1, 1964 where he received the Bronze Star for his service during the Viet Nam Campaign.
He was united in marriage with Rhonda Summers and to this union two daughters were born, Erin and Erica.
The family made their home in Olathe, KS where he worked as a masterplumber for 25 years until retiring. During this time he served as Commander of the Earl Collier Post 153 and was also Past Vice Commander of the State of Kansas; 40 & 8; and VFW Post.
On September 7, 1985, Duane married Joan Morrison Weiss in Olathe and Joan added her three children to this marriage, Sally, Penny and Major.
Duane and Joan moved to Anthony and Duane joined the Anthony Masonic Lodge #200 A.F. & A.M. He also served as Chancellor Commander for Wheatland Lodge, Anthony of the International Order of Knights of Pythias and was also a past District Representative of Heartland Pythias for Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. Duane was also a girls softball couch for many years in Olathe.inAnthony at the age of 64.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Duane will be missed by his wife, Joan Echternach of the home in Anthony; daughters: Erin Russell and husband, Danny, of Santa Fe, NewMexico, Erica Echternach of Phoenix, Arizona, Sally Osiier of KansasCity, Missouri and Penny Welch of Wichita; son: Major Weiss and wife,Debbie of Anthony; sisters: Connie Neal of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Sheralee Schmidt and husband, Verlyn of Souix Falls, South Dakota; sisters-in-law: Sally Simon and husband, Bob of Lakeland, Florida and Billie Fidler and husband, Bob of Grove, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren: Alex Russell, Zach Russell, Colton Russell, Paige Echternach, Tyler Echternach, Megan Rhoads, Brandi Horton, Ronda Gonzales, Hal Welch, Ben Welch, Brooke Moore and husband, Derek, Kandice Weiss, LaurenWeiss, Holly Weiss and Major Weiss III; 10 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; other relatives and many friends.
