Death of Mrs. H. N. Hackett

Mrs. Eliza Jane Hackett, who passed away at her home, 201 West Cedar Street, Olathe, Wednesday afternoon, February 18, 1931, following pneumonia, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fulton. She was born in Brookfield, O., on December 31, 1937. On April 13 1864, Miss Fulton was married to Henry Newton Hackett at Columbus, Ohio. At the first call for volunteers, Mr. Hackett responded, raised his own company, and was mustered into service as first lieutenant. He rose to the rank of Captain before the close of the war, and was henceforth known as Captain Hackett. During this time Mrs. Hackett resided at Massillon, Ohio. Prior to coming to Olathe in 1874, Mr. and Mrs. Hackett lived at Lee's Summit, Mo. In 1878 Mr. Hackett bought the Avenue Hotel and from then until 1905, when he sold it to Al Hunt, operated an excellent hotel known all over Kansas for the fine service rendered its patrons.

In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Hackett moved to the present home, where early in March each year, Mrs. Hackett was wont to plant her garden, famous over the county. She is survived by three children, Mrs. W. C. Keefer, W. R. Hackett both of Olathe and Bert Hackett of Walla Walla, Wash. A daughter, Nora died over thirty-five years ago.

Mrs. Hackett's funeral was held at the Julien Undertaking parlors Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the sermon being preached by the Rev. A Frank Johnson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Olathe of which Mrs. Hackett was a devoted and active member during her life time.

Pall bearers were Charles Ott, Albert Ott, Bert Gilbert, Harvey Livermore, Will Denley, Hillis Green. Mrs. H. E. Julien, Mrs. Ralph Ott, E. N. Hill and Harry Buchholtz were the quartet, and Mrs. Bert Gilbert sang a solo.

Burial was in Oalthe cemetery under the auspices of the Julien Undertaking Company.
