The Life of Absolom Meyers

KILLED BY FRISCO PASSENGER TRAIN

While Returning Home From a Visit With Son at Merriam the Father  and Mother Met Their Death.

Absalom Meyers and wife of this city were killed at the Frisco crossing at Pleasant View last Sunday morning, when returning home from a visit with their son, Alfred Meyers who resides at Merriam. At Pleasant View the Strang Line runs parallel with the Frisco. Mr. and Mrs. Meyers had crossed the Strang Line and stopped for a moment between the two tracks talking to a passerby. The passenger train from the north which arrives in Olathe at about 11:30 struck and instantly killed them. It is down grade at this point and the bodies were carried about a quarter of a mile south before the train could be stopped.

They were driving one horse to a buggy and the bodies and buggy were carried on the pilot of the locomotive almost to the next crossing south, which is about one quarter of a mile The bodies were placed aboard the train and brought to this city and when the train reached Olathe the Methodist church services had just closed and the bodies were identified by their son-in-law, Ernest J. Vigour.

They are survived by nine children, four of whom reside in this county, three sons and a daughter: Percy and Arthur Meyers and Mrs. E. J. Vigour reside here. The son, Alfred, whom they had been visiting at Merriam is a civil engineer in the employment of the Kansas City Structural Steel Co., Mrs.  Arthur Creasey lives in Landing, Idaho; Mrs. Chas. Stretcher at Peabody, Kansas.; Mrs. B. F. Gehman at Hagerman, New Mexico; Mrs. Harry Vigour in New York City; Orell Meyersis teaching school at Hagerman, New Mexico.

All the children were at once notified and will arrive in time for the funeral which will be held at the Methodist church in Olathe, Friday morning at 10:30.

Mr. Meyers was sixty-seven years old and Mrs. Meyers sixty-four. They moved recently from their farm, one mile south, where they have resided for many years, on what is known as the old Watson place. Since November last, they have lived in Olathe on South Cherry street and have been busv remodeling their new home. It was only Saturday, the day before this terrible accident, that the last finishing touches were completed. The children were all expecting to receive in a few days an invitation for a family reunion to be held at their home about June 1st.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyers were members of the Methodist church in which they were active members and the fulfilling of their church duties were a very important part of their devoted lives. Their time was spent in doing good for others, the memory of which will live on. And the sudden call to the better land found them ready and prepared. The Meyers are related by blood and marriage to many of the prominent families of this county and are well and favorably known over the county, this being their home for the past sixteen years. Friends who wish to see the bodies may do so at Ryan & Company's chapel Thursday afternoon.
