The Life of Thomas Seaton

DEATH Of .THOMAS SEATON

Olathe people were called upon the first of the week to mourn the death of Mr. Thomas Seaton, an old, and highly respected citizen of Olathe, but who had lived for the past few months with a nephew, George Seaton, two miles north of Perry, Kans.

His death occurred Sunday morning, January, 23, at; 3:20. The body was brought to Olathe Monday where the funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o''clock, in Ryan''s Chapel, Rev. D. R. Steiner officiating. Burial was made in the Olathe Cemetery.

Mr. Seaton was born April 14, 1836 in Carroll County, O., and was consequently within a very few weeks of 80 years of age. His ancestry was entirely Irish. Born on a farm, the oldest of eight children, his father died when he was only 14.  He therefore, became the main support of his mother and seven brothers and sisters. He found time to serve an apprenticeship as a carpenter and cabinet maker, but the family left Ohio in 1S68, moving to northern Missouri, there they bought a farm and lived five years, and during that time he bought and operated a threshing machine -  one of the first in that section of the country.

He and Mrs. Seaton, who was Miss Hannah McComb, to whom he was married November 22, 1859, came to Lawrence, Kans., in April of ''73. That summer he and a brother-in-law, brother-in-law, came down into Johnson County with their threshing outfit and in August his family came, and since that date Olathe was their home.

At different times Mr. Seaton was a meat cutter here and finally ran a business of his own. After selling his meat shop he returned to his old trade of carpenter, and later cabinet making. If Mr. Seaton had a hobby it was "work." He was busy with hammer and tools all the time. Everyone had a good word for Thomas Seaton, for it was a, pleasure to talk with him, as from his abundant store of knowledge much could be learned.

He is survived by one son, S.-T. Seaton, and a sister, in Lawrence, who was unable to be at the funeral on account of illness. A daughter, Nannie, died November 10, 1873, at the age nine. His good wife died a months ago.
