The Life of VIRGINIA RUTH ABSHIRE
Virginia was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, January 12, 1928, to Walter and Hazel Nester. She was united in marriage to Don L. Abshire in 1945.
Virginia’s first contact with the Body of Christ was in the 1940’s in Indiana. They moved to Kentucky and were a part of Bro. William Sowders church until his death and then remained under Bro. James Sowders until 1955 when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. There they attended the Body church pastored by Bro. Benny Morris and Bro. Paul Mears.
In 1964 the Lord dealt with Virginia’s husband, Don, to get his children in church. Their contact with the Goodwin family down through the years helped make their decision to move to Des Moines to be under Bro. Lloyd Goodwin’s ministry.
Virginia believed in prayer. We heard testimonies of how she would pray over her children’s clothes and shoes asking God to direct their path and to keep them from danger.
Their refrigerator quit working and they didn’t have money to repair or replace it. So Virginia prayed and it started working. One time their car was stolen and again, prayer was sent up and the car was found and returned.
The one prayer she prayed that has echoed in our church was when she had a bill that she could not pay. She prayed and said, “Lord, I’m going to enjoy watching you work this out for me,” and…He did. About a week later an envelope arrived and in it was a check for the amount of money she needed. (The family spoke to this person to let him know Virginia passed away and shared with him how he was an answer to prayer when she was in need of finances…he broke down and cried. We let him know he was used by God to supply her need.) God is good.
Virginia is survived by her sister, Norma Hast of Greenwood, Indiana. Her children, Don E. (Rhonda) Abshire, Carol Foster and Becky Krier of Urbandale, Iowa and Gary Abshire, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was blessed with eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
