The Life of MICHAEL MCCOURT
Michael McCourt, 81, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. He was born on April 12, 1933 in Glendale, CA to Dewey and Pat (Corlett) McCourt.
Michael grew up in the South Bay area graduating from Redondo Beach Union High School. He served in the Army from 1953-1955, stationed in Korea. Returning to the USA, he married the love of his life, Janet Browne in North Redondo, CA. He and his family moved to Chicago where he attended the Moody Bible Institute graduating in 1959. He earned his Bachelor''s Degree in Christian Education at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. He relocated to Seattle, worked at ACME Personnel Service, was transferred to Des Moines in 1973. He retired in 1998 from the National Council on Compensation Insurance. Michael was a loving family man who lived his faith in God. His joys in life were family, church and serving people. He was especially known for telling dumb jokes.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Janet; children: Gail (Don) Gunstone of Gresham, OR, daughter-in-law, Rhonda McCourt of Pleasant Hill, IA, Glenna (Mike) Bleadorn of New Berlin, WI, Jeffrey (Peggy) McCourt of Plymouth, MN, Georgene (Dennis) White of Polk City, IA, Carolyn (Jeff) Anderson of Cantabria, Spain; brother Brian McCourt of San Diego, CA; sister: Sharon Hamilton of Carlsbad, CA; 23 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jonathan; a granddaughter, Katelyn; and a great-granddaughter, Keilah.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2014 at First Federated Church, 4801 Frankin Avenue, Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Hamilton''s near Highland MemoryGardens,121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, IA. A private family graveside service will be held at Highland Memory Gardens in Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Federated Church short term mission projects or Mercy Hospice Johnston.
