The Life of JANICE JEAN PIPER

Janice Jean (Godfroy) Piper was born on July 17, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa.  She was the third of the five children of Boyer Godfroy and Esther Lichty.  She graduated from Des Moiens North High School in 1957.  She received her Associate of Arts Degree from Seward County Community College (Liberal, Kansas) in 1981.

On August 22, 1959, Janice was married to John L. Piper in Des Moines.  John and Jan had four sons, Anthony, David, Michael and Jeffrey.

Janice is preceded in death by her mother, Esther Lichty; her step-father, Allan Lichty; and her brother, Gary Godfroy.  She is survived by her husband, John Piper, and sons, Tony, Dave (Shari), Mike and Jeff (Tera).  She has seven grandchildren:  William Piper, Stephanie (Ryan) Kennedy, Jillian (Manuel) Reyes, John J. Piper, Shannon Piper, Jesse Piper, and Brandon Piper.  She also has two great-granddaughters: Sophia Presler and Gabriella Reyes.  Additional survivors are three brothers, Jack (Pam) Godfroy, Jim (Susan) Godfroy and Joe (Sheri) Godfroy.

One of Jan''s great loves was classical music and she played the organ, piano and cello.  She played the organ for several churches over the years.  Jan also loved to cook and bake.  She was the owner/operator of her home bakery called, "The Cookie House" in Liberal, Kansas for several years.  Jan loved gardening and in 1999 Jan and John became Master Gardeners through the Iowa State Extension Office.  She enjoyed playing cards and was a volunteer at St. Anthony''s Church in Des Moines.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2012 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.  The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brooks Tonini Chapel, 2135 SW 9th St., Des Moines, with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
