The Life of IDA JEAN MCCALLISTER

Ida Jean (Matz) McCallister was born December 7, 1929 in Arlington, Kansas to Ferdinand and Mabel Matz.

She married James Loyd McCallister on April 4, 1952. Ida Jean took great pride in making a home for her family. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and crocheter. She was selfless with her time and volunteered for many organizations. Her volunteer work included Southern Baptist Campers on Mission, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, and the Central Iowa Alzheimer’s Association. She spoke fondly of her job as the receptionist at Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. She worked as an office assistant for many organizations in Des Moines, lastly Valley National Bank, now known as US Bank. She was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church, an award winning bowler, and enjoyed family camping trips and square dancing. Her energy was boundless and will carry on in this world through the lives she touched.

Ida Jean passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Valley View Village in Des Moines at the age of 84.

Ida Jean is survived by her husband of 62 years, James; children: JoAnn Dean (Stephen) of Leon, Marilyn McCallister (friend, Kathy Peterson) of Newton, Allen McCallister (Carol) of Des Moines, and James McCallister, Jr. (Brenda) of Shelton, WA; sisters, Margaret Steinert of Liberty, MO and Phyllis Schafer of Boulder, CO; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Etta Mae Plenert, and brother, Alton Matz.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at Crestwood Baptist Church, 3717 Forest Avenue, Des Moines. Following a luncheon, interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery
