Obituary for Frankie Buckner

Frankie Mae Buckner

Frankie Mae Buckner, 90, went home to be with the Lord on January 17, 2014.

She was born on June 25, 1923 to the late Early Holley and Dora Gamble (Holley) Hollis. At the age of 5, she was baptized by the late Rev. Melton Nunn in Alexander City, Ala. The family moved to Akron, Ohio in 1929, and then to Barberton, Ohio in 1932, where she joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Barberton. She remained a member there until 1948 when she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Akron, Ohio under the pastorate of the late Rev. A. L. Dykes. She was a member of the Missionary Circle #5 and faithfully served on the Usher Board until her health failed.

She worked for Goodrich Tire & Rubber Co., Thermal Engineering and Design Co., and retired in 1999 from the City of Akron, Pollution Controll Division. She was a member of the Charles St. Block Club and the Cidell''s Travel Club, traveling all over the world which included such places as Alaska, Greece, Hawaii, and Spain.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Elmer Hollis; husbands, James A. Buckner and Earl Rowe; daughter, Beverly A. Rowe; sisters, Annie Ruth Vinson and Marietta Drake; brothers, Albert Hollis and Walter Hollis; niece, Adell Vinson Jones; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Anna Buckner Collins; special friends, Nettie Benson, Anna Carr, and Morris Powell.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving daughter and caregiver, Sandra K. Buckner of Akron, Ohio; sons, Kenneth J. Rowe of Akron, Ohio, and Philip J. (Barbara) Buckner of Fairlawn, Ohio; niece, Sharon Ervin of Denver, Colo.; brother-in-law, John T. (Myrtle) Buckner; daughter of the heart, Mardeka Powell; Goddaughters, Felicia Benson and Barbara Ellerson; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Service will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 327 Cuyahoga St., Akron, OH 44310, Rev. Dr. Luther C. Cooper officiating. Interment at Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 W. Thornton St., Akron, Ohio, Friday, January 24, 2014 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 185 Charles St., Akron, OH 44304.
