Obituary for Edward Galla

AUSTINTOWN – Edward Galla, 84, passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Edward was born March 26, 1929, in Youngstown, to parents John and Elizabeth (Kondas) Galla.

Edward served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He worked for General Fireproofing and in 1962, left to go work for the U.S. Postal Services in Youngstown. He was a letter carrier, then promoted to supervision. He retired in 1998. Edward also served as a Volunteer Fireman for Austintown Fire Department.

Edward married Frances Woods-Schrock on Aug. 28, 1979.

He was very active in the Zion Lutheran Church in Cornersburg. He was a past president of the Youngstown Employees Credit Union and served on the board of directors. He was a member of the Saxon Club and served as the financial secretary for many years. He was Saxon Man of the Year in 2003. He was an avid bowler in several leagues, loved playing cards and bocci. Edward was not one to sit still too long and enjoyed so many things and remained very active during his entire life.

Edward is survived by his wife, Frances; sons, Donald E. (Nancy) Galla of Sugarland, Texas and Jeffrey R. (Terry) Galla of Valparaiso, Ind.; daughter, Cynthia Bella of Boardman; grandchildren, Matthew Galla, George and Elaina Bella; stepchildren, Larry (Debi) Schrock of Canfield, Donald (Theresa) Schrock of Conroe, Texas and Melissa McGuire of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepgrandchildren, Jesse, Jay, Dawn Melissa, Kelly and Brittany Schrock, Corinn Sanders, and Codie McGuire; four great-grandchildren; brother, William (Beverly) Galla of Poland; and sisters, Elsie Hilton of Florida, Betty Bushong of Florida, and Maryann (George) Richardson of Canfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Parobek; and brothers, John and Paul Galla.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, and Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Cornersburg.

The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Interment will be held at Green Haven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Edward’s memory to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Saxon Club.
