Obituary for Wilma Shaffer

Wilma L. Shaffer (nee Grooms) of Mentor, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Lake Health West Medical Center in Willoughby. She was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Washington County, Pa. She had lived in Willoughby for the past 44 years. She was the beloved wife of 69 years to Donald Ray Shaffer, who died in March 2012. Mrs. Shaffer retired from Willoughby-Eastlake Schools in 1997 after 12 years of service. In addition, she was a childcare provider for many years and loved kids. She was a member of Mentor Plains United Methodist Church and the Mentor Civic Senior Center. She was the loving mother of Donna (John) Cibula of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lenora (Gregory) Nimmo of Mentor, Judy (Vincent) DiMizio of Hudson, Ruth (Timothy) Harber of Mentor and Cory Shaffer of Portland, Ore.; devoted grandmother of nine, great-grandmother of 17; and cherished sister of Ira W. (Lois) Grooms of Somis, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Emma (Miller) Grooms; sisters, Doris (Eugene) Wiggins and Velda (Charles) Dillow; and brother, James Grooms. She will always be remembered as a loving and caring person who enjoyed crocheting, sewing, puzzles and spending time with her family. The family will receive friends and family at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013, before the Memorial Service at 12:30 p.m. at Mentor Plains United Methodist Church, 7271 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor. The Rev. Dr. Russell E. Martin will officiate at the service. Her final resting place will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chester Township, where she will be interred next to her husband, Donald Shaffer.
