Obituary for Elmer R. Slifka

ELMER R. SLIFKA YOUNGSTOWN – Elmer R. Slifka, 90, entered peacefully into rest on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 6:35 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Boardman, with his loving family at his side, following a lengthy illness. Elmer was born the son of the late John and Mary (Antonik) Slifka on March 19, 1922, in Youngstown, and was a life long area resident. He was a graduate of South High School and had been employed as a steel worker with the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Corporation for 30 years, retiring from his duties in 1972. Elmer was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Youngstown and was an avid golfer, enjoyed horse racing and in his younger years, he played in the minor leagues as a catcher. He also had served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Nov. 30, 1956, Elmer was united into marriage with the former Virginia Fossesco and had shared 46 loving years together until her passing on Jan. 24, 2002. His memories will be remembered and celebrated by those he leaves behind, daughters, Judy Ferguson of Austintown and Barbara Soles of Boardman; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Slifka; daughter, Roseanne Goodall; three brothers, Anthony, Albert, and Joseph Slifka; and two sisters, Katherine and Josephine. A private family service will be held and there will be no visitation. Burial will be at Greenhaven Cemetery in Canfield. The family requests that material contributions take the form of tributes to the Wounded Warriors, 1120 G. St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20005.
