Margaret McMurray Herr October 31, 1917 - October 19, 2012 Resided in Austintown, OH Margaret McMurray Stanners Herr, 94 AUSTINTOWN – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, for Margaret McMurray Stanners Herr, 94, who died Friday evening at Briarfield Manor. Margaret was born on Oct. 31, 1917, Halloween, in Bo''Ness (Borrowstounness) on the Firth of Forth, West Lothian, near Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, U.K. She was the daughter of the late James W.J. and Mary Crawford Henderson Stanners. She moved to America and Youngstown with her parents in 1923. After graduating from Chaney High School in January of 1936, Margaret became a long distance telephone operator for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. She was married on Feb. 14, 1942, Valentine''s Day, to Wesley Herr, at the former Tabernacle United Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, where she had been a member of the Women''s Association and a Sunday School teacher. After World War II, she and her family lived in the U.S. Canal Zone when her husband was employed by the Panama Canal Company. After returning to Youngstown, she worked for The Vindicator and retired as their Chief PBX Operator after 25 years of service. She then became a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Margaret was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, past President of the former Flora MacDonald Auxiliary No. 58 of the Royal Order of the Scottish Clans, and was the Chief Daughter of the former Lady Grant Lodge No. 153 of the Daughters of Scotia. She was a member of the Miriam Chapter of the Eastern Star and belonged to the Mau Mil Auxiliary. Mrs. Herr was a life member of both the Austintown Historical Society, the Friends of the Austintown Library, and served as an early treasurer of the former John W. Davis Elementary PTA. Margaret was an avid traveler, reader, and was related on her maternal side to World and PGA Gold Hall of Famer, author, and teacher, the late Tommy Armour, the "Silver Scot," who played at the Youngstown Country Club. She is survived by two sons, James W. Herr of Austintown and Thomas J. (Kate) Herr of Richmond, Va. She has two grandchildren, Megan M. (Nathan) Lester of Richmond and Garth W. of Charleston, S.C.; and her three great-grandchildren, Thomas Hoke and Brogan Zay Lester of Richmond and Ella Roselynn Herr of Charleston. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wesley of 67 years in 2009; and a sister, Ena (Christina) MacCallum Booher. Friends may call 5-7 p.m on Monday at Lane Family Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel 65 N. Broad Street and on Tuesday for one hour prior to the the service at the church. The family would like to thank the staff at Briarfield Manor and Hospice of the Valley for the care and concern given to Margaret during her illness. The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Herr Family Scottish Arts Scholarship Endowment of The College of Wooster, c/o the Development Office, Galpin Hall, 1101 N. Bever St., Wooster, OH 44691 or to the Memorial Fund of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, OH 44512. Interment will be at Green Haven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were made by the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.
