Obituary for Gertrude Hughes

Gertrude (nee Holbrook) Hughes (1918-2012) | Gertrude (nee Holbrook) Hughes, 94, of Chardon Township, passed away April 13, 2012 at home. Born Feb. 3, 1918 in Thornton, Ky., she was a longtime area resident. Gertrude Holbrook married Theodore Minton on Nov. 28, 1933. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1947. She then married Kenneth Hughes on Oct. 28, 1950. He preceded her in death on Aug. 12, 1960. Gertrude was a member of Whitesburg Presbyterian Church in Kentucky and attended Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon where she baked for many church functions. She was employed for 16 years in the kitchen by Chardon Local Schools baking for the students; retiring in 1978. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and working in her garden. She loved to not only work in her garden, but also to teach her family and friends everything she knew dealing with flowers and gardening. Gertrude's passion was spending time with her friends and family. Survivors include her son, Daniel (Lynnie) Minton of Wadsworth; daughters, Ricki (Wayne) Huron of Avon and Lucille Pringle of Mentor; sister, Beatrice (Manie) Strouth of Pound, Va.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Abbot and Clemmey (nee Tolliver) Holbrook; first husband, Theodore Minton; second husband, Kenneth Hughes; brothers, Robert, Marvin, Rufus and Mayo Holbrook; sister, Mary H. Taylor; and son-in-law, William Pringle. Pastor Chris McCreight of Pilgrim Christian Church will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township. Contributions may be made to Pilgrim Christian Church, 201 North Hambden Street, Chardon, OH 44024.
