Obituary for Dorothy Baldwin

Dorothy Jean (nee Curtis) Baldwin (1947-2012)Services for Dorothy Jean (nee Curtis) Baldwin, age 89, of Mentor, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012, at East Shore Church United Methodist, 23002 Lake Shore Blvd., Euclid. Dorothy passed away March 10, 2012, in Mentor. Born Jan. 19, 1923, in Kirtland, she lived in Kirtland and Euclid most of her life, and for the past two years at Kemper House in Mentor. Dorothy was a graduate of Kirtland High School and Miami University, Oxford. She married Russell M. Baldwin on Aug. 7, 1947. Dorothy was a third-grade teacher at Upson School in Euclid, and later assisted her husband with his optometry practice in Euclid until his retirement in 1986. She was active in a host of community affairs including more than 30 years on the Auxiliary Board of Euclid Hospital, past president, putting in more than 7,000 hours of volunteer time there. She was an active member of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, Lake Shore Chapter, for over 50 years and past president. Dorothy was past president of Lake Shore Garden Club and chairman of Mayor's Traffic Safety Committee for Cleveland. She was chairman of Euclid Hospital's Crystal Ball and annual Fashion Show twice and was a member of the Information Committee of Euclid Hospital as well. Dorothy's hobbies included bridge, gardening, reading and supporting her husband's love of photography and travel, which took them on 27 major trips worldwide to such places as India, China, Papua/New Guinea, Easter Island and Russia. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Jim (Deanna) Baldwin of Riverside, Calif.; Barb (Tom) Coss of Greenville, S.C.; John (Norma) Baldwin of Madison; Nancy (Martin) Lang of Amityville, N.Y.; David (Bethann) Youmans of Leroy, and Jane (Arne) Larson of Concord Township; many grand-nieces and nephews; and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell (Doc) Baldwin; parents, Cyrus Martindale and Lennah Curtis; sister, Marjorie (Bill) Youmans; brothers, Clyde (Ruth) Curtis, Clarence (Leticia) Hunkin and Merwin (Joan) Hunkin; and nephew, William Marshall Youmans. Interment will be at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
