Obituary for Donald Shaffer

Obituary Donald Ray Shaffer (1920-2012) | Services for Donald Ray Shaffer, 91, of Willoughby, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012. The Rev. Dr. Russell E. Martin will officiate at the services. Mr. Shaffer passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Salida Woods Assisted Living in Mentor. Born Dec. 11, 1920, in Confluence, Pa., he lived most of his early life in Rices Landing, Pa., and has lived in Willoughby for the past 43 years. He was a member of Mentor Plains United Methodist Church in Mentor. He was also a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 811th Military Police Unit, and a member of George E. Hayward Veterans Foreign Wars Post 9295 in Mentor, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2300 in Willoughby and the American Legion Post 8116 in Rices Landing. His passions included buying and selling cars, singing and dancing to big band music. Mr. Shaffer was employed at Eaton Corporation in Cleveland. He retired in 1981 after 26 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wilma L. (Grooms) Shaffer; children, Donna (John) Cibula of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lenora (Gregory) Nimmo of Mentor, Judy (Vincent) DiMizio of Hudson, Ruth (Timothy) Harber of Mentor and Cory Shaffer of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His parents, Gratta Ray and Beatrice Cadia (Lenhart) Shaffer; brother, William Shaffer; and sister, Inez Callahan are deceased. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
