Joseph A. Massaro
CAMPBELL – Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Lucy Church for Joseph A. Massaro, 81, who passed away Saturday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Joe was born March 31, 1929, in Youngstown, the son of Pasquale and Olga Iandimarino Massaro.
He was a 1947 graduate of East High School, where he excelled in football and in 1999 was honored with an induction into the East High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1970, he also graduated from Youngstown State University, with a bachelor’s degree in education.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic at several bases in Texas from July of 1948 to January of 1951.
Joe owned and operated M & S Builders and upon his retirement in 1992, he sold his shares of the business. Prior to that, he worked a variety of jobs including mill work at Truscon Steel and carpentry work.
He was a member of the church, where he served as an usher and president of St. Lucy Men’s Club, and chairman of the parish finance committee. As finance chairman, he oversaw the completion of many parish projects including, the renovations of the church lounge and CCD classrooms, the building of the rectory garage and the preparations of the choir loft for the pipe organ. He also served as chairperson for the parish indoor festival and St. Lucy Feast Day Celebration.
Joe enjoyed playing cards, working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles and reading. He was blessed with an amazing sense of humor, filling the house with laughter. He will be missed by those who loved him dearly.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of nearly 54 years, the former Ida Gennaro, whom he married on June 2, 1956; two brothers, John of Austintown and Anthony (Billy) of Canton, Mich.; a sister, Susie (Cross) Thomas of Simi Valley, Calif.; a brother-in-law Nick Mazzocca; and many nieces and nephews, including his special godchildren, Nicole Almasy Bruggeman of Cincinnati and Joseph Almasy of Henderson, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Philomena Stanec.
