Dr. Carl Sims
YOUNGSTOWN – A funeral service celebrating the life of Dr. Carl Sims will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Third Baptist Church with the Rev. Morris Lee officiating. Dr. Sims passed away on Friday July 2, 2010.
Carl was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Youngstown, a son of Roslyn Wunthal and Joseph Sims.
He attended Monroe Elementary, Hillman Jr. High and graduated from South High in 1970. Carl attended Syracuse University and Kent State University. He received a Bachelors followed by a Masters of Science in Biology from Kent State. He then went on to study at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, obtaining a Ph.D in biophysics. Dr. Sims did post-doctorate work at the University of Pittsburgh and taught and did research in the Biology department at Youngstown State University. He received many awards and grants for research and they were published in several scientific journals. Carl was an active member of the YSU Chapter of the Ohio Education Association and Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
Carl was a passionate educator and tutor, working with Upward Bound, organizing curriculum and teaching gifted minority students. He was also a member of St. Johns Baptist Church in Painesville, the Providence Baptist Church in Cleveland and the Third Baptist Church of Youngstown. He served on the board of the Ohio Alcohol and Drug Board of Cleveland. He was an active member of AA. Carl held a lifetime membership in the NAACP. He was active in the election campaign of President Barack Obama. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, bicycling and was an avid fan of boxing.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving mother, Roslyn Sims of Youngstown; his siblings, Joseph Sims Jr. of New York City and Miriam Warren, Robbie Sims, Daniel Sims and Frederick Sims, all of Youngstown; a great-uncle, John Gains of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Sims Sr.
Interment will be at Greenhaven Cemetery in Canfield.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Washington Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Monday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.
