Obituary for Donald S Ferko

Donald S. 'Babe' Ferko Sr. “Together Forever” AUSTINTOWN - Donald S. Ferko Sr., 79, passed away Monday night, Feb. 8, 2010, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center following a brief illness. Donald was born Dec. 9, 1930 in Youngstown, a son of the late Francis and Margaret Chumita Ferko, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1949 graduate of Ursuline High School and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Philippines. He worked for many years as a tile-setter with Bertolini Brothers and Youngstown Tile and Terrazzo, retiring in 1992. Mr. Ferko was a member of St. Joseph Church and was active in the men’s renewal programs throughout the Diocese of Youngstown. He was also a member of Catholic War Veterans John J. Buckley Post No. 1292 and enjoyed golf, fishing, spending winters with his wife in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and most importantly, being his family and friends. He leaves two sons, Donald S. Jr. (Vicki) Ferko and Darryl A. Ferko, both of Canfield; three daughters, Darlene S. (Daniel) Wiery of Austintown, Dina M. (Bruce) Giambattista of Boardman and Dawna L. (Kevin) Mellott of Austintown; 14 grandchildren, Donald S. III (Malinda) Ferko, Abby Ferko, Sarah Ferko, Steven Ferko, Daniel Wiery, Marisa Wiery, Nick Wiery, Brittany Steinbeck, Jimmy Steinbeck, Craig Giambattista, Ryan Giambattista, Tyler Mellott, Brandon Mellott and Sophia Mellott; and a great-grandson, Donald S. Ferko IV. His wife, Helen M. DeFuria Ferko, whom he married April 16, 1955, died Feb. 13, 2009. His step-father, Roman Kruse and two brothers, Norman and Francis Ferko Jr., are also deceased. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2009 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown. Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Austintown. Interment will follow at Green Haven Cemetery.
