Obituary for William J Mathias

William J. Mathias POLAND – William J. Mathias, 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Mr. Mathias was born Dec. 24, 1930 in Marion, a son of Harry and Dorothea Schneider Mathias. He was a 1948 graduate of Marion Harding High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was an artillery instructor. Following his return home, he began his career as a lineman for Ohio Edison, moving up through the ranks to his final position as the Commercial and Institutional Sales Supervisor, retiring in 1992 after 44 years. He was a member of the Argus Lodge, 545 F.&A.M. and the Saxon Club. He was an avid Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavalier fan, as well as an Ohio State fan. Following his retirement, Mr. Mathias enjoyed traveling with his wife to Florida, the New England States, Hawaii, Arizona and traveling to casinos in Las Vegas. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Gwen Halbert, whom he married Aug. 9, 1958; two sons, Kent (Dorien) Mathias of Westminister, Md. and Keith (Tina) Mathias of Dublin; one daughter, Kim (Don) Schettler of Poland; and six grandchildren, Drew Mathias, Katie Mathias, Donny Schettler, Jenna Schettler, Jordan Mathias and Sydney Mathias. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Mathias. Family and friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where Masonic services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield. Memorial contributions may be given in Mr. Mathias’ name to the American Heart Association, 840 Southwestern Run Road, Boardman, OH 44512 or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
