Obituary for Karl Schmidt

KARL J. SCHMIDT BOARDMAN – Calling hours will be this evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Anstrom-Velker Funeral Home for Karl J. Schmidt, 64, who died Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Mr. Schmidt was born Jan. 30, 1946, in Youngstown, a son of Walter M. and Mildred Bitner Schmidt. Karl was a 1964 graduate of East High School and attended Youngstown State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1966 and served as a photo interpreter. He was stationed on board the USS John F. Kennedy CVA 67 from the time the ship was commissioned. Karl was a salesman in food sales for 26 years before he retired. Following his retirement he was the sexton of the First Covenant Church for 10 years. Karl was a very active member of the church where, he had also served on the Diaconate, as head usher, and as chairman. Karl loved all sports and was an avid bowler, once bowling a “300” game in league play. Before his illness he was a faithful blood doner for 20 years. Especially during his illness, Karl’s spirit and smile was truly an inspiration of faith and love for his family and friends. Karl leaves his wife of 37 years, the former Carol A. Travis, whom he married April 7, 1973; his daughters, Tina and Lina, both of Boardman; his sister, Roberta (Don) Keys of Venice, Fla.; his brother, John M. (Jeannie) of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Anthony Schmidt of Boardman and Cassie Beachum of Warren; four nieces; and a nephew. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Covenant Church where the family will also receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
