Stanley Payne
YOUNGSTOWN – Mr. Stanley Payne, 98, was the first born son of three children of the late Rev. Harrison G. and Belva Grayson Payne.
He was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Oil City, Pa.
He was a graduate of Westinghouse High School, attended the University of Pittsburgh and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Youngstown State University.
He had been employed for 39 years, with the Ohio Bureau of Employments Services (OBES), now known as the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Stanley received many awards and certificates, including the Governor’s Award for Meritorious service, president of the Ohio Chapter of the International Association of Personnel on Employment Security and was vice president of the Youngstown Leadership Conference. He was a proud American and served as staff sergeant in World War II, receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a lifetime member of Roberts Deliberating Club of Youngstown.
Serving God was a privilege, whether as Sunday school superintendent or trustee for over 60 years with St. Andrewes AME Church. He also served as president pro tem, receiving the honor of Trustee Emeritus. He loved life and was interested in politics, sports and the news.
He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, his God-chosen and forever faithful wife of 48 years, Louise Thompson Payne; his sister, Harriet Payne (Larry) Young of Detroit; brother-in-law Robert Hatcher of Kodiak, Alaska; niece Robenette (Nicholas) Sagalken of Kodiak; nephew Peyton (Donna) Grey of Atlanta; a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; goddaughter Madonna C. (Russell) Pinkard of Youngstown; and a host of other family, church family and friends.
Special thanks to the following care givers for their kind and loving attention during his illness, Shepherd of the Valley, Forum Health Northside Medical Center, Hospice of the Valley, Eddie Muhamed, Giovannia Brown and Spencer Owens at home.
Besides his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Olive Payne Mack; brother-in-law Ray Mack and Margaret Davis Payne.
Friends may call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Andrewes AME Church, where funeral services will follow immediately at 11 a.m.
