Obituary for Emma Maldonado

Emma Maldonado “Together Again” POLAND – Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown for Emma Maldonado, 89, who died peacefully on August 1, at Hospice House. Emma was born May 18, 1921, in Mylovhia, Ukraine. She was the daughter of Emmanuel and Matilda Burkhardt. She was part of the last wave of immigrants to come through Ellis Island and gained citizenship on Dec. 8, 1978. She moved from New York City to Youngstown, where she met her beloved husband, Juan Maldonado. They were married May 24, 1950. Juan and Emma retired to Florida in December of 1984. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother Karl and sister Paulina. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Rose (Cholo) Hernandez, David (Janice) Maldonado, Heidi (John) Nemeth and Anna (Donald) Yuhasz; eight grandchildren, Melissa Zitkovic, Tao Jones, Joli Kmetz, Michael Rutana, Sunny Hernandez, Tia, Shala and Sierra Maldonado; and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Mariah, Gracie, Dominick, Connor and Hunter. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and “Oma” to many. She enjoyed gardening, baking, cooking and sewing. Family and friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church. Emma’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, ICU Unit and Hospice House for the compassionate care that was given to Emma. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be sent to Hospice House. Arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
