Gloria Joyce Waterfield of Philadelphia passed away on December 5, 2021 atthe age of 95. Born
June 18, 1926 to the late Thornton Wilks & Frieda (Hause) Waterfield, Gloria was a talented
artist and designer, traveler, gourmand, and dog lover.


Gloria graduated fromtheMoore College of Art & Design with a degree in Commercial
Illustration and went on to pursue post-graduate studies in advertising, design, and commercial
concepts atMoore and the School of Visual Arts in NewYork City. In the late 1950s,she served
as Executive ArtDirector for the American Baptist Publication Society, directing all layouts and
supervising production of the organization's nationally-circulatedmagazines. Her work garnered
dozens of awards fromPhiladelphia, Chicago, and NewYork-basedmagazines, lithographic, and
ArtDirectors' Clubs.


Throughoutthe 1960s, Gloria worked as art director at advertising agencies including N.W. Ayre
& Son,where she designed bold and innovative print and television campaigns that yielded
unprecedented results on behalf of herclients,which included Pyrex, Bostitch, DuPont, Union
Camp, and Colliers Publishing among others.


Following additionalcoursework at TempleUniversity and theUniversity of Pennsylvania, Gloria
earned a Professional Certificate in Commercial Art and Vocational Instruction fromthe
Pennsylvania Department of Education. She passed on her expertise and passion for art and
design to students throughoutthe Philadelphia School District as a vocational education teacher
for nearly 20 years, until her retirementin the 1990s.


Gloria also bred and showed poodles,competing in numerous regionalcompetitions. She cared
deeply formany dogs throughout her life.


In herspare time, Gloria was a prolificreader and lifelong learner who enjoyed fine dining and
trying newthings. She traveled throughout Europe and theUnited States,with an enduring sense
of adventure and independence.


Gloria is survived by her goddaughters, Gwynne L. Isaacs and Cecilia Isaacs-Blundin
