Obituary for JACK CLARK CARTER

Jack Clark Carter- age 85 years

A local small businessman Jack Carter passed away on January 11, 2023. He proudly owned and operated Overdoors of Iowa for nearly 40 years before retiring to Cottonwood, Arizona in the late 1990s.

As a father, step-father and friend Jack filled our hearts with love.  Jack is survived by his companion Valerie Behnke; his children Jeff Carter, Jenny (Carter) McCrory, Mike Carter, and Chris Carter; his step-children Laura Woods, Dan Fowler, and Patty Kuehn; his 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and his half-sister Captolia Carter.  He is preceded in death by his second wife Mary Carter (d. 2009) and his first wife Carol Carter (d. 2022).

For most of his life Jack enjoyed various aspects of car racing.  He participated in many ways.  Jack loved auto cross racing in his 1970 Fiat 124 Spider and belonged to SCCA (Sports Car Club of America.)  He joined pit crews for friends who raced across the country in venues such as Brainerd International and Can-Am Speedway.  He watched racing in the stands at numerous events including the Des Moines Grand Prix and the Indi 500.  He even had the opportunity to ride in a NASCR with a professional driver going more than 200 mph.

Jack was a Mason for over 50 years at Auburn – Union Park Lodge in Des Moines.  He volunteered for the Cottonwood Police Department (Arizona), and participated in the Iowa National Guard ROTC program.

Jack is watching over us with a gentle heart.  A grave side service will be held March 7, 2023 at 2 pm at Highland Memorial Gardens, 1 NE 60th, Des Moines Iowa.  Friends and family are welcome.
