Obituary for ELEANOR ELAINE SORENSEN

Eleanor Elaine Sorensen passed away peacefully on her 85th birthday in Durham, NC after a brief illness.

Elaine was born on February 26, 1938 to David and Dorothy Mulcahy in Ames, IA. She grew up in Des Moines, IA and graduated from North High School in 1956. She married the love of her life, Thomas Sorensen, in 1957. They were married for 43 years.

She is survived by her two children, Andrew Sorensen of Denver, CO and Lorie Christensen (John) of Durham, NC; four grandchildren, Robert Christensen (Jen), Layne Christensen, Kate Christensen Pick (Marty) and Drew Sorensen; five great grandchildren, Soren Christensen, Walker Pick, Charlie Pick, Eliana Sorensen and Emersyn Swanson. She is also survived by two special sisters-in-law, Beth Mulcahy of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Janice Mulcahy of Des Moines, IA. Elaine’s many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews held a special place in her heart. She was so proud of all of them.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom, brothers Robert Mulcahy and Bud Mulcahy, sister Betty Lepeltak, and sister-in-law Dorothy Davis.

Elaine worked in the credit union industry for over 30 years. She retired as the manager of Firestone Credit Union in 1986. She went on to serve as the president of the Meredith Pointe Homeowners Association until she moved to North Carolina in 2016.

Elaine loved being surrounded by family and friends and looked forward to every holiday get together. She loved to cook and was famous for the peanut brittle she made at Christmas. She was a devoted Hawkeye fan. Always a sports fan, Elaine loved watching sports on TV, especially football and golf.
