Obituary for Mrs. Thelma Elaine Hursh

Thelma Elaine (Hafer) Hursh, 91, passed away peacefully at Country Meadows of York – South on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Thelma, or “Honey,” as she was known to many, was the wife of the late Richard L. “Dick” Hursh for 63 years.

Born in York on July 19, 1931 to the late Charles J. Hafer and Thelma E. (Emig) Hafer, Honey is survived by her loving family, including daughters, Lisa A. Strine and her husband, John, of York and Mindy J. Smith and her husband, Jim of Landisville; five grandchildren, Erin E. Strine of York, Matthew J. Strine and his wife, Brittany of York, Dr. Kyle R. Smith of Denver, CO, Shannon E. Hockenberry and her husband, Michael, of Manheim, and Tanner J. Smith and his wife, Dakota Blagg, of Seattle, WA; and five great-grandchildren, Audrey and Evan Strine of York and Eli, Finnegan and Leo Hockenberry of Manheim. In addition to her husband and parents, Honey was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Marie Hursh, and a brother, George H. Hafer.

A proud 1949 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, Honey completed nursing school at Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore. She began her nursing career for the Visiting Nurse Association in York before serving as a private duty nurse for many years while working behind the scenes at the family business, C.J. Hafer Display Service.

Honey was a long-time member of Trinity United Church of Christ in York as well as the Garden Club of York. She loved her family and friends, who will remember her kindness and wonderful sense of humor and fondness for music, entertaining, gardening and reading.

The family wishes to thank Country Meadows of York – South and Serenity Hospice for the loving care they provided to Honey.

A Celebration of Life Open House will be scheduled at the convenience of the family. Burial will be private.
