JUST A SMALL PIECE OF RON’S LIFE STORY
In the Spring of 1940, a young back couple rushed toward Magee Women’s hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to welcome their 3rd child to this world. To their surprise, that child was in a hurry and was born en route to the hospital. The couple already had 2 daughters, and given that it was 1940, they did not know but were delighted to learn they now had a son, William Ronald Nevel…and then a few minutes later…they had another one.
The first born of the twins, – “Ron, Uncle Ron, Uncle Ronnie, Dad, Daddy, Pop or Pop-Pop” was born April 10, 1940 to Will & Althea L. (ne Wilson) Nevel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the 3rd of 7 siblings.
As a youngster Ron spent his formative years in the Hill District, Verona and Garfield areas of Pittsburgh as well as some time in New York City where several of his sisters would eventually settle. After High School, Ron worked in a wide variety of jobs throughout the northeast United States including jobs in sanitation, manufacturing, assembly lines, maintenance, grave-digging, trucking, demolition and pretty much anything else that paid a good wage for a good day’s work.
In 1971, Ron began a long career in the mental health field working at the non-profit, Chartiers Center. Initially hired as support staff, Ron developed into a longtime director of programs to support special needs adults; including the management of programs to assist special needs adults to develop occupational skills necessary to gain outside employment. After a 40+ year career at Chartiers, Ron “retired” to pursue his true life’s calling; working for Sandy. ??
In 1969, Ron worked as the maintenance supervisor at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, where he also doubled as a youth counselor mentoring young black men, and coached recreational basketball & football teams. It was here that he met the eventual love of his life, Sandra L. Black, who was working there as an instructor to young mothers.
Ron & Sandy eventually developed a great friendship, fell in LOVE, and married on May 9, 1970. They lived at 7363 Formosa Way; later moving back to the old homestead at 853 Inwood, where they were instrumental in the early development of their niece and nephews.
After a few years, Ron & Sandy saved enough to purchase their 1st home at 8907 Upland Terrace in Penn Hills and after 13 years there, moved to their home at 151 Maple-Lo Drive. They hosted many BBQs, Holiday gatherings, card parties and family get-togethers of all kinds at both homes. It was Ron & Sandy’s dream to have a home that created enduring family memories, AND THEY DID JUST THAT!
Ron was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Sandra L. Nevel, his parents (Will & Althea), his sisters Althea Bruce & Jo-Ellen Wells, his beloved father-in-law James Black and many other family members & friends that he loved.
Ron leaves to mourn his passing yet celebrate his life sisters Shirley, Marjorie & Carol; brother Henry (“Don”); children Pamela, Steven, Brian; beloved sister-in-law Deborah Clemmons and her children whom he loved as his own Craig, Dana, Garnett, Dante; grandchildren Imani, Dylan, Alexander, Zoe, Olivia; daughters-in-law Jarrin & Stacey; as well as a host of, Great nieces & nephews, cousins, in-laws, mentees, students, and co-workers that is too long to list.
