Obituary for Mr. Bertram Furgess

Bertram “Bert” Furgess, 87, passed away peacefully at home on August 19, 2022 in Murrells Inlet, SC, joining his late wife of 39 yrs, Carole Furgess. Born on June 30, 1935 in Passaic NJ, to the late Bertram J. and Eugenia (Laszlo) Furgess Sr., Bert was raised in Bridgeport, CT, attending Fairfield Prep in Fairfield, CT. While at Prep, Bert played football, basketball, and baseball. For over 30 years, Bert worked as a golf course superintendent for various country clubs in Connecticut. His second career was that of an alcohol and drug counselor until his retirement in 2003, when Bert and Carole retired to South Carolina.

In addition to his beloved wife, Bert is predeceased by his three children; sons Michael and David Furgess, and daughter Lisa Furgess; a stepson Mark LeMoult, and stepdaughter Kelly LeMoult.

Bert leaves behind three stepsons; Michael LeMoult and Chris LeMoult of Trumbull, CT, and Kevin LeMoult of Myrtle Beach. Grandchildren Michael, Meghan, Jessica, Heather, Jeremy, Shea, Kate, Scott. Eric, and great grandchildren Aleesia, JJ, Cora, Nya, Gwendolyn, and Theodore.

A huge Yankees and New York Giants fan, Bert loved going to games when he could, and always, always watched every game on tv. Also an author, Bert had published several books later in life about his father, NY sports, and his wife Carole.

Bert was a longtime friend of Bill W. A sponsor, mentor and friend to many, and always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand. Despite his many losses, Bert remained grateful, loving, faithful, gentle, humble, spiritual, and present. When you spoke with him, you had his undivided attention. His example of a sober life well lived is his legacy, as is his family who loved him so, and his beautiful marriage to his soulmate Carole. You have set the bar high, Bert, and those of us still here can only hope to keep up.

“I try hard to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one’s heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion we can ever know” - Bill W.

Friends may greet the family on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Goldfinch Funeral Home, 11528 Highway 17 Bypass, Murrells Inlet, SC at 11:00 am. A mass of Christian burial will be held in Connecticut at a later date at the convenience of the family.
