Obituary for Jeanette P. Evans

Jeanette Pitcher Evans  1932 -2021

Beloved mother of Susan E. Evans, Lansdowne, and Barbara Evans Celia (James), Collegeville; “Gammy” of Sarah Celia Gallagher (Devin), Jeffersonville, and aunt to nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her husband of nearly 25 years J. Richard “Dick” Evans, parents Daniel G. Pitcher and Jeanette Wolff Pitcher and sister Molly Pitcher McIntosh.

As a child Jeanette lived above her father’s pharmacy in North Philadelphia, helping out when she got older.  She graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1949 and shortly thereafter obtained a job with The First Pennsylvania Banking & Trust Co. In order to learn more about the industry Jeanette attended evening classes offered by the American Institute of Banking where she met her future husband. Hearing her stomach grumble, he fed her Lifesavers and the rest, as they say, was history. Leaving banking to raise a family, Jeanette later found herself back in pharmacy teaching young pharmacists old tricks of the trade.

Though claiming that she was no good in math, Jeanette could easily translate U.S. measurements into metric. Once, while knitting a sweater, she not only noticed that a line of instructions was missing but figured out the progression of the missing row, continuing on to finish the sweater as if nothing had happened. When cooking she could cut a recipe in half, or double one for Christmas cookies.

She loved to cook (prodded on by her husband) everything from sweetbreads to shoofly pie and German to Chinese.

Throughout the years she made clothes for her family, personalized afghans for wedding presents, collaborated on a wedding gown for daughter Barbara from multiple patterns and Halloween costumes for granddaughter Sarah (which lasted for years as dress up dresses). She even got Dick into doing counted cross-stitch!

Among her passions were reading, handwork, learning, photography, traveling with her family, gardening and her pets.

Interment: Private. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
