Obituary for Louise B Smith

Louise B. Smith

1926-2021

On September 4th, 2021, Louise Barca Smith passed away peacefully at White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa, the first daughter of first-generation immigrant Italian parents, Joseph and Maria Barca. She was a loving and caring sister to her two younger siblings, Anne DiLullo and Marie Barca.  When she entered first grade, she spoke only Italian but by the year’s end she was fluent in English.  After being named valedictorian at South Philadelphia High School, Louise received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. It was while attending Penn that she met her husband of forty-seven years, J. K. Lee Smith Jr.

Louise delighted in her family. She is survived by her children Lee (Bernadette), Andrea (Mike), and Mia (Jin-Sheng) and her five grandchildren Kathleen, Zachary (Ali), Jacob, Grace (Ana) and Aidan and her great- grandchild Lyla. Louise was a source of loving support to her family.

Louise was a dedicated educator who taught World Cultures and British Literature at Haverford High School for seventeen years. After retirement she and her husband, Lee, travelled to twenty-one countries on three continents.

Later in life Louise enjoyed classes at Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning, where she began to paint and sculpt.  Louise cherished her many friends she made in her time at Hershey’s Mill, Swarthmore, and White Horse Village.
