Obituary for Mr. Glenn E. Bartels

Glenn Elwood Bartels of York passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020, surrounded in love by his family. Glenn was born on April 22, 1932, the son of Horace E. and Laura M. (Ulrich) Bartels. He was the husband of Phyllis R. (Stell) Bartels for 66 years. A faithful parishioner, he was first a member of Second EUB Church in York, where he and Phyllis were married on Valentine's Day, 1954, and later at Aldersgate United Methodist Church.Glenn was dedicated to his wife and family - his two daughters, Kim Witkovsky (David) of York, and Stacy Bartels (Matthew Kaufhold) of Havertown, PA - and his grandchildren: Matthew Witkovsky (Megan) of Lancaster, Rachel Witkovsky of Palmyra, and Dana Kaufhold and Jacob Kaufhold of Havertown. He also loved his two great-grandchildren, Parker and Quinn Witkovsky. Glenn always put his family first and was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. Glenn graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1950. He attended York Collegiate Institute and spent his career in graphic services, advertising, and last, in printing at the former Strine Printing Company, where he retired in 1999. Glenn was active in the former Devers Lions Club for several decades and he played softball and coached boys' teams in his church league. He was a skilled bowler, playing in two leagues for many years. A proud Bearcat, he followed York High football and basketball, and was an avid Dodgers and Orioles fan. He and Phyllis were able to travel to Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, DisneyWorld, and to the Caribbean on a cruise, among others. But, their favorite getaway spots were Rehoboth Beach, DE and later, Ocean Pines, MD. The couple also spent their retirement years travelling the northeast collecting antique toothpick holders - some which won ribbons at the York Fair - and were once members of the National Toothpick Holder Collectors Society. Glenn also had an interest in all kinds of cars, especially antique and classic autos. Glenn was one of eight siblings, six of whom passed before him: Kenneth Bartels, Jeanne Knaper of Florida and York, Roger Bartels of York, Merle Bartels of Tennessee, Ruth Paul of York, and Floyd (Jack) Bartels of Oklahoma. His younger sister, Charlene Kelley, York, survives him. He was also devoted to his wife's family, and enjoyed being a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Glenn touched the lives of many people during his life, and was always quick with a kind word and a smile..
