Obituary for Mr. William Richard Shope

Hershey - William Richard (Dick) Shope Sr., 83., of Hershey, passed away peacefully August 1, 2021 at Hershey Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Please join our family in celebration of our beloved Father and Grandfather. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service, on Friday, September 24th at the Greenmount Cemetery in York, PA at 10:00 AM. Use the 721 Carlisle Avenue entrance. Luncheon to follow at 1:30 PM at 88 JMR Circle in Hershey, PA. He was born in York, PA. Husband of the late Susan Ann (Lentz) Shope. Son of the late James R. Shope and Maude L. Shope. He was also proceeded in death by sister Virginia S. Wiest and brother James R. Shope Jr. Richard is survived by son and daughter-in-law W. Richard Shope Jr. and Janet Hinson Shope, Ellicott City, MD; daughter and son-in-law Lyn Shope Britton and Val F. Britton, Wayne, PA; grandson and wife Myles F. Britton and Kimberly Lane Britton, Richmond, VA; grandsons William (Will) Richard Shope III, Weehawken, NJ, Christopher G. Britton, Seminole, FL, Kyle E, Shope, Manhattan, NY, granddaughter Lyndsey S. Britton, Philadelphia, PA; and sister Geraldine S. Shipley and brother Robert K. Shope. Raised in York, PA he graduated from York High School in 1956. He had a full and active youth including part-time jobs, sports, singing in the church choir, YMCA counselor, Boy Scout camp counselor, and student body president. After high school, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business graduating in 1959 with a degree in Economics. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduation he began his sales and marketing career in the metals industry with Alcoa in Pittsburgh, PA. Subsequent promotions and transfers took Richard and family to Lancaster PA, Aurora, OH, Birmingham, Al. and Devon, PA. Richard and Susan established lifelong friendships along the way. Much of his life was centered around his wife, Susan, his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years and his children and grandchildren. A beloved grandfather, known affectionately as Shup, he spent many vacations and summers enjoying their company in Ocean City, New Jersey and Longboat Key Florida. The consummate storyteller and joke teller, family and friends will always remember his friendship, warmth, positivity, and good nature. He lived a full life, in his words, and his example of how to live fully will remain with his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to be made to Wounded Warriors, Central PA Food Bank, or Ronald McDonald House Charities.
