Obituary for Catherine "Kat" Roddy

Catherine “Kat” was born in Lafayette, LA on July 5, 1955; the oldest of 4, she was a second mother to her siblings, helping raise them when their parents were at work. She disciplined them, led, them and guided them as if they were her own children. Family was an essential part of her life. She was the anchor and the glue of not only her immediate family but her entire family.

As a child she was extremely close with her grandmother, spending much time with her grandparents at their camp in Bayou Benoit. Even into adulthood she looked back on these cherished memoires; often reflecting on them with her children.

She graduated from Comeaux High School in 1973. On June 14, 1975 she married her childhood schoolmate and future husband of 45 years, Steven Roddy. A lover of animals, after she and Steve married, they both assisted a local Veterinarian at his farm caring for his personal animals as well as helping in his clinic.

In July of 1975 she graduated from Spencer Business College. “Kat” spent the majority of her working career as Medical Office Manager at various local OBGYN practices in Medical Billing. She had strong knowledge of the medical field; assisting in her in laws and other family members billing questions when they arose. She always wanted to be a nurse and technically was one to all of us. Kat embodied all the qualifications of one but just lacked the actual degree. In her 50s she began going back to college for Nursing and was making straight A’s something she was so incredibly proud of. Due to an illness that occurred with her husband Steve she had to step back putting college on the back burner.

After her career in Medical Billing she began to work from home working for a neighbor managing his companies books. In 2008 due to numerous medical issues she was forced to retire. In January 2019 in addition to her already preexisting medical conditions she was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. Just like the other obstacles she faced in her life she took this head on enduring chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy treatments. Thru all the pain she continued to fight because her main concern was her family above herself. This was the mantra of her entire life, whether it be for her family or friends.

The impact she made was extremely evident in the lives she touched.

An excellent cook, when asked what her recipes were in written form she like her mother Anna didn’t have a written recipe it was simply “some of this, some of that”. She was the only one who could replicate her mother in laws coveted Rum Cake and smothered green beans.

She was the queen of Mahjong. Kat also enjoyed playing Spider Solitaire, bingo scratch offs, and going to the casino. A lover of old black and white movies, and tv shows. She loved Andy Griffith and Columbo. Many Columbo episodes she could literally recite line by line.

She enjoyed fishing and crabbing. She enjoyed boiled crabs and to watch her clean them was truly an art; if any meat was left it was rare. She loved working outside in the flower beds. While she loved many flowers her favorites were magnolias and roses.

While she wasn’t one to shop much she did find enjoyment in garage sales and flea markets. Kat loved to dance. Her and Steve could often be found dancing at weddings, family events, and when they would go out.

Kat held a strong faith in Jesus; raising her children with a Christian upbringing, ensuring they had a relationship with Him. Whether it be saying nightly prayers with her children, or reading her tattered bible, she was the spiritual leader of the family.

Her love for her family knew no bounds. She was a giver instead of a taker, putting others needs above her own, even despite pain. Her legacy of love, compassionate, strength, courage and endurance will not be forgotten.
