Obituary for Mr. John E. Pfeiffer Sr.

John Pfeiffer, Sr., age 90, passed away from complications of COVID on Friday, February 12th at York Hospital. Since 2014, he had been living at Normandie Ridge in York. Mr. Pfeiffer was born and lived nearly his whole life in York. After graduating from William Penn Senior High School, he attended Concordia Lutheran Teacher's College in River Forest, Illinois, for two years, training to become a teacher like his uncle Jim Strayer. For most of his twenties, Mr. Pfeiffer lived in Chicago with his brother Ed while working at Dutch Boy Paints. In 1961, he returned to York to get married. Mr. Pfeiffer was a long-time employee of Honeywell and its predecessor Industrial Solid State Controls.
Mr. Pfeiffer's main passion in life was music. He became proficient at classical piano at a young age and was an avid performer. He served for decades as the organist and choir director at First St. John's Lutheran Church and before that at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (both in York), as well as different churches in Chicago when he lived there. He was also a train enthusiast and enjoyed hiking, bicycling and traveling to places such as Yosemite National Park and Rehoboth Beach, Maryland. Each year, he donated money to a variety of charitable causes.
Mr. Pfeiffer was preceded in death by brother Ed Pfeiffer and sister Doris Harris (née Pfeiffer). He is survived by brother David Pfeiffer and his wife Sieglinde Pfeiffer, ex-wife Mary Ann Rudler (née Raab), son John Pfeiffer and his wife Catherine Hutton, and stepchildren Greg Flinchbaugh, Cathy Johnson and Chris Flinchbaugh, along with several cousins, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their children. An internment ceremony will be held on Thursday, July 22nd, at 2:00pm at Prospect Hill Cemetery in York. Please meet at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance (1200 Pennsylvania Avenue) at 1:45pm.
