Obituary for Carl R Bieber

Carl R Bieber Sr., 81, owner of Carl R Bieber Tourways, Kutztown, died Sunday at 1:30 a.m. in Reading Hosptial, where he had been a patient for several hours. A resident of Fleetwood RD. 2, he was the husband of Carolyn E. (Frey) Bieber. His first wife, Loraine M. (Shade) Bieber, died in 1981.

Born in Kutztown, Bieber was a son of the late Harry F. and Amelia L. (Reeser) Bieber.

Bieber started the bus tour business in the fall of 1931 during the Great Depression after he was laid off by the Kutztown Foundry and decided to become an independent hauler. He bought a 1921 truck, and from that initial purchase, he built Carl R Bieber Tourways. Today, the company has offices in Reading, Kutztown and Allentown. Bieber recently was named Transportation Person of the Year by the Reading Traffic Club.

He also received National Defense Transportation Day and National Transportation Week honors in a recent proclamation from the state Senate, which said he has played a key role in developing the transportation system of Berks County.

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown, Bieber was a past president of the Kutztown Lions Club, a past secretary of the Kutztown Fair Association and a director of the Allentown Fair Association. He was past director of the Allentown Court 128 Royal Order of Jesters.

Other survivors include a son, Carl R. Bieber Jr., Kutztown, and two daughters, Eleanor M. Rothermel, Oley, and Barbara A. Biscanti, Wyomissing. There are also six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. A son, Clair, who died in 1958. The Edward J. Hildenbrandt Funeral Home, Kutztown, is in charge of arrangements. .
