Obituary for Brooke H. Schlegel

BROOKE H. SCHLEGEL, 78, of 41 S. Laurel St., Kutztown, died Sunday morning at 1: 15 in Community General Hospital, where he had been a patient since Saturday afternoon. He was the husband of Catherine H. (Fox) Schlegel.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Frederick and Catherine (Wanner) Heckman and the foster son of the late Clyde and Lucy Schlegel.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown, where he had been the financial secretary in 1955 and had served on the church council for 25 years. An adult Sunday school teacher, he had also served as Sunday school superintendent for 10 years.

He had been employed for 38 years by Atlas Mineral and Chemical Inc. Mertztown. as a supervisor for field work for 25 years, and as contract engineer for 8 years. The last five years he worked in the research lab before retiring in July 1971.
Schlegel had been chairman of the eye conservation committee of the Kutztown Lions Club, where he also served on the board of directors.
Since 1974 he was the superintendent and secretary of Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. He was a past director of the Reading branch of the Y.M.C.A. and a past president of the East Penn branch or the YMCA.
A member of the Civil Service Commission of Kutztown, he had also served as welfare secretary of the Salvation Army welfare program.

In 1977, Schlegel received the annual Outstanding Citizen award from the Kutztown Jaycees.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons: Clifford B., at home, and James F. of Kutztown, and three grandsons. Also a foster sister, Alma Ackerman of Allentown, and a foster brother, Harold Schlegel of Breinigsville, Lehigh County.
