Obituary for Mr. Mellies G. Stettler

Mellies G. Stettler, Jr., of Kempton, formerly of Kutztown, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of the late Miriam E. (Buss) Stettler, who died July 19, 2002, and Grace L. (Mantz) Stettler, who died August 11, 1951. He was also the long-time companion of Ella H. (Schlegel) Richard, who died February 19, 2017.

Born in Bethlehem, Mellies was a son of the late Mellies G., Sr., and Cula I. (Bartholomew) Stettler. He attended Nazareth High School and honorably and faithfully served his country in The United States Navy during World War II, abord the USS Huntington. Mellies was employed as a Mailroom Postmaster at Kutztown University for 10 years retiring in 1994.  Prior to that, he was employed at Xode Company, Kutztown for seven years; Kutztown Publishing Co. for 17 years and Nazareth Item Newspaper for eight years.  

Mellies served as a Cub Scout Pack Leader of Troop #153, Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown for 29 years. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Kutztown, where he served as an Elder and Deacon of the Consistory and enjoyed being a part of the candy makers group. Most recently, he attended New Bethel Church, Kempton, with his family. Mellies loved to play cards, especially pinochle and hasey, BINGO, and jigsaw and sudoku puzzles. He also enjoyed attending Berks Encore in Fleetwood. 

Mellies is survived by his three children, LeAnne L. (Stettler), wife of Peter A. Zettlemoyer, Kempton, Mellies G., III, husband of Elizabeth (Klett) Stettler, Ambridge, PA, and James A., husband of Yvonne (Eck) Stettler, Kutztown; two brothers, Raymond J. B. Stettler, Bethlehem and Nelson S. T. Stettler, Nazareth; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. 

In addition to his wives, companion, and parents, Mellies was predeceased by his son, Dennis T. Stettler in 1964, and a brother, Glennwood A. Stettler. 

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, PA. A funeral service to celebrate and honor Mellies life with Reverend Rebecca Sausser officiating will begin at 11:00 a.m. The service will also be LIVE streamed for others to view from home.
