Obituary for Oskar Wilheim Egger

Oskar Wilhelm Egger died peacefully at his home in Alexandria, Va. on February 5, 2020, surrounded by his family.  He was born in El Paso, Texas, October 11, 1926, the third son of Anselm Egger of East Tyrol, Austria, and Maura Trejo of Chihuahua, Mexico.  Upon graduation from Cathedral High School, El Paso, in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  He served in the Pacific theater for the last years of World War II on the U.S.S. Bosque.  He married Mary Elaine Sullivan on January 27, 1951 at St. Gabriel Church, Washington, D.C. and graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Washington, D.C. on June 11, 1951.  After working in various management positions at a wide variety of corporations, he founded Egger Enterprises, a documentation service to expedite commercial export shipments, visas, and legal documents.  He retired from full-time work in 2007, but continued working part-time for several years.  Besides his wife of 69 years, he is survived by their six children: Kenneth Egger(Nancy) of Fairfax Station, Joy Sutherland of Alexandria, Mark Egger(Teresa) of Front Royal, Amy Egger of Arlington, Carole Hetrick(Gregory) of Springfield, and Katherine Wagner(David Cooke) of Centreville; also sixteen grandchildren: Julie Kennedy(Benjamin), Katherine Makris(Michael), Sean Sutherland(Mallory), Casey Sutherland(Haley), Jeremiah Egger, Máire Maher(Daniel), Bébhinn Rowland(Trevor), Magdalena Ferrara(Joseph), Naomi Egger, Nora Weiss(Brent), Anna Mitchell(Michael), Grace Hetrick, Jude Hetrick, James Wagner(Valeriia), Joseph Wagner(Laura), and Dominic Wagner; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Samuel Kennedy, Evelyn Kennedy, Miles Kennedy, Elias Makris, Hank Sutherland, Siobhán Maher, Inés Maher, Matthias Maher, Cecilia Ferrara, Brooks Weiss, Ella Weiss, Sadie Weiss, and three not yet born. He is also survived by his brother-in-law James Sullivan(Margaret) and sister-in-law Marcia Behun and many nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout the world.  He will be remembered as a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, with a wonderful sense of humor.  A traditional Requiem Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 10, at St. Rita Catholic Church, 3815 Russell Road, Alexandria, with visitation beforehand at 9:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations may be made to the St. Rita Building Fund, 3815 Russell Rd. Alexandria, Va. 22305, or the Centro Santa Catalina, 1400 Hardaway St., Suite 112, El Paso, Texas 79903, which works with poor women and families in Juárez, Mexico.
