The third of seven children, Crystal Donella Black Brown was
born in Beatrice, Alabama to Billie and Vida Oweda Bradley
Crystal attended public schools in Beatrice and graduated
from the Monroe County Training School. She attended Tuskegee
Institute where she met Wallace James Brown. The two
were engaged for four years. They graduated in May 1959 and
married September 20, 1959. The couple had two daughters
Velina and Cara. Since Wallace was a career Army officer the
family moved frequently. Crystal, a registered nurse, easily
found nursing positions where ever her husband was stationed.
Crystal worked as a nurse for 38 years and received
many awards for her outstanding work in the field. Her last
position was at San Francisco General in the Chemotherapy
Clinic from which Crystal retired in 2002.
For over forty years Wallace and Crystal made their
home in South San Francisco. They worshipped at Bethel
A.M.E. Church and joined December 4,1983 under Pastor
Reverend Howard S. Gloyd. She was in the Missionary society.
In 1987 Crystal joined and became an active member of
the Gamma Nu Chapter of the IOTA PHI LAMBDA Sorority.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 56 years
Wallace Brown; brothers: Billy C. Black, Ph. D and Bradley
Franklin Black. Crystal Donella Black Brown departed this life
and entered into eternal rest June 3, 2019 at home with her
loving daughters around her.
Crystal is survived by her daughters: Velina Brown,
(Michael Sullivan) and Cara Brown; grandson Zachary Brown
Sullivan; four siblings: Velma Black Pace, (Cecil) McDonough,
Georgia, Col.(Ret.) Clinton J. Black, (Rhutelia), Temple Hills,
Maryland; Dan T. Black, Ph.D.,(Maude), Fort Valley, Georgia;
and Dovie Holliman, (Charles) Dublin, Georgia. Also left to
cherish her memory are a host of nieces, nephews, and
cousins; In laws: John Brown (Betty), Donald Brown (Theresa),
Marvin Brown(Ella) ; Helen Jennings Black (Billy), Rosa Brown
Crocker and friends.
