Obituary for Mee Yuk Wong

Mei Yuk Wong was born in Canton China in 1923.  She passed away peacefully on April 27, 2019.

She immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong in 1972 where she married Hing Wong in 1972.   She is survived by three stepchildren Virginia, Harland/Jane and Patricia, 16 grandchildren and 9 great-great children.

Mei Yuk, known fondly as "Yee-Po" to my family, was a positive and strong woman. She was a woman ahead of her time who navigated through the world with confidence and self-reliance. Her many passions included travel, cooking, and her faith. Each of these she embraced with pure joy. She took many road trips with her late husband, Uncle Hing to Seattle, Vancouver, and LA and was known to sneak in some "driving" time -- steering the wheel while Uncle Hing managed the gas and brake pedals on these long road trips. She traveled well into her 80's, often back to China and Hong Kong to visit family and friends.

Mei Yuk was also known for her cooking. I am sure many of us here today benefited from her love of food.   Whether dumplings, soup, or curry - she always wanted her guests to be well fed. And once satisfied that you were adequately fed, she was sure to send you home with boxes of her home cooked meals.

Much of her life was also dedicated to her church. She and Uncle Hing worked hard to build the congregation for her church, Assembly of Living God.  Her devotion to God was evident in the way she lived her life. She was generous with her time and spirit, caring for sick friends, praying for all those around her, and living her life with compassion and sincerity.

Most of all, Mei Yuk was devoted to her family. When her sister, Alice Wong was near the end of her life, Mei Yuk visited her daily, spending hours sitting with her, talking or sometimes just sitting silently knowing that the gift of time was precious.  Her living room shelf was filled with pictures of her stepchildren and grandchildren and she could proudly recount exactly when and where each photo was taken.

Mei Yuk had a life rich with the love of family and friends, and an unquestioning faith in God. She was equally generous in sharing her joy and positive attitude. We will miss her food, her chuckle, and the dried plums and ginger she always carried in her purse. We will miss how she looked out her kitchen window to see who was at her front gate. But we will always have the lasting gifts she has left with us - her stories, her lessons, and the memory of her smile.
