Obituary for Stanton Hom Fong

Stanton Hom Fong, 94, of Houston passed away peacefully on  February 8, 2019. As a thoughtful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, integrity, and independence.

He is preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, May Yook Woo and his eldest son Arthur Fong. He is survived by his family: son Raymond Fong and his wife Victoria and grandchildren Chandler and Corbett; daughter Susan Fong Wong and her husband Hoy and grandchildren Annastasia, Preston, and Randall; and daughter-in-law Theresa Wong Fong and grandchildren Jonathan and Samantha and great-granddaughter Isabella.

Born on December 24, 1924, to Fong Guang Kuan and Guan Rui Ying in the village of Do Let, near the town of Kaiping, Guangdong, China, Stanton was the youngest of four children. He immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 13 and lived and worked with his uncles in Chinatown and attended public schools. He returned to China to marry May Yook Woo in 1948. Together, they had three children and lived in San Francisco. In 1961, the family moved to Houston with the opening of Stanton’s Super Market. Stanton and May operated the grocery store until their 1988 retirement. They loved to travel and play mahjong in their later years.

Stanton Hom Fong had a remarkable journey in life. He will be missed by all who knew him for his generosity and sense of humor.
