Obituary for Carmel C. Ching

Carmel Chew-Jun Ching

Carmel lived a full life during her 91 years.  She was born in China in 1927, married Thomas Yook-Sing Ching & moved to the United States at 20, and two years later began a family.  Together with her husband, they worked hard to support their growing family.  Through their sacrifices, they purchased their home in San Francisco’s Sunset District, where she then lived until her passing.

Carmel was a seamstress & developed skills that enabled her to make custom clothing and upholstery.  As with her sewing, she took the necessity of cooking for her family and evolved it into a much-loved craft. Carmel was also an avid gardener.  She enjoyed learning to grow a variety of flowering plants & fruit trees, as well as experimenting with grafting.

It was the fresh air and Nature’s best that drew Carmel to enjoy the outdoors, first in her garden & later through travels with her family.

Above all, Carmel’s primary love was being mother, grandmother & great grandmother.  She spent many years caring for her seven grandchildren from infancy through pre-school.

Carmel was a good, kind, generous & loving person.  She will be dearly missed & will remain in her family’s & friends’ hearts, always.

Carmel is preceded in death by her husband Thomas, sister Annie, brother Tommy, brothers-in-law Melvin and Charlie, & sister-in-law Lonnie.  She is survived by her sisters Jenny &  Elsie, her children Marcelle, Yvette, Norbert &  Odette, her sons-in-law Lawrence and Phil, her daughter-in-law Wendy, her grandchildren Danielle, Ian, Marissa, Sean, Charlotte, Carl, Loren &  Jacob, her grandsons-in-law Mathews &  Geoff, and her great grandchildren Aaron, Tiyamika, Takumana, Jake, Audrey & Walani.
