Obituary for Shawn Peter DeJulio

Shawn Peter DeJulio, born December 26, 1987 in Albany, NY, passed away November 23, 2018 after sudden illness at Olathe Medical Center, surrounded by family and friends. Shawn was a 2006 graduate at Olathe South High School. He is survived by his parents John and Maria (DiBiase) DeJulio of Olathe KS, his brother Adam DeJulio of Milwaukee, WI, aunts, uncles and cousins.

While Shawn enjoyed playing and participating in a number of sports, he excelled in the water. He was a member of the Community of Olathe (COOL) swim team for 10 years, swam at Olathe South High School, qualifying for state competition each year, and then was a member of the swim/dive team at Canisius College (Buffalo, NY), where he received his BA in Sociology in 2010. He shared his love for the water by working with the Optimist Swim Club every summer, starting when he was 12 years old. He continued teaching swimming through college and most recently as a swim instructor at Life Time Fitness.

In addition to his job at Life Time, he was employed as a barista at Starbucks. When people would ask him about his employment choices, his response was that his major, Sociology, is the study of human society and what better way to study human society than by working at Starbucks.

As a result of attending Cansius College, Shawn became a huge Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan, as well as the snow – the more the better. Shawn had the biggest of hearts, giving to others and always trying to make things better for everyone.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Olathe Medical Hospital’s Critical Care Unit for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in Shawn’s name made to the Michael Phelps Foundation, 7 Ocean Street, South Portland Maine 04106. Donations can also be made online by clicking Michael Phelps Foundation.
