Obituary for Paul L. Solt

Paul L. Solt, 88, of Mertztown, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 22, 2018, while a patient at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the widower of Violet E. (Kunkle) Solt, who died on November 20, 1986, and the long-time companion of Joyce Grim. Born in the village of Clayton, Berks County, Paul was a son of the late Manassas W. and Annie (Hess) Solt. He was a member of New Jerusalem Zion United Church of Christ, Krumsville, where he was very active for many years. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran. Paul and his brother, Russell, were the founders of P&R Solt Sawmill, now Solt's Sawmill in Mertztown. He owned the business from 1956 until his "semi" retirement in 2001, but continued to help around the sawmill for many more years until recently. He was an avid woodworker and even made his own casket in preparation for his journey home. He also enjoyed bird-watching, working in his garden and taking his yearly trips to Elk County, PA and Cape May, NJ. Paul was a former member of the New Bethel Zion Cemetery Board, and was a donor to Keystone-Miller Blood Bank. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters.

In addition to his long-time companion Joyce, Paul is survived by his children, Michael P. Solt, Mertztown, Kerry L., husband of Ivy (Weiser) Solt, Alburtis, and Sharon Solt Miller, wife of David Miller, Alburtis; a sister, Bonnie L. Solt, Mertztown. He was also the "Pappy" to his five granddaughters, Prudence (Solt) Miller, Melanie (Solt) Miller, Emily (Miller) Mattole, Sarah (Miller) DiCicco and Hannah (Miller) Phillips; and his six great-grandchildren, Riley, Madelynn, Wyatt, Maddox, Luca and Everly. Paul was predeceased by his wife, parents, and siblings, Edwin, Betty, Floyd, Russell and Lee.

A funeral service to celebrate Paul's life will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in New Jerusalem Zion UCC, 1456 Krumsville Road, Lenhartsville, PA (Greenwich Twp.) with his Pastor Tammie J. Wisniewski officiating. Burial will follow in New Bethel Zion Cemetery, Greenwich Twp., Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the church.
