Olvin Roscoe “Mac” McBarnette
June 21, 1927 – October 18, 2017
First elected African American Schools Superintendent of Harlem District 5, passed away on October 18, 2017 at 90 years old. In WWII, he served in the Army Medical Corps. He was a founder of the Queens Youth Alliance, trustee of New York City Basketball Hall of Fame, and chairman of Harlem Red Cross. (Published in The New York Times on 11/12/17)
Olvin McBarrnette, Mr. Mac, or simply Mac to his friends and family, will be remembered for his humor, warmth and never ending efforts to improve his community. His acquaintanceship was wide and warm. He leaves behind his children: Bruce, Camilla, Yvette, Elayne Sara, Ellen and Andrea; grandchildren Nettie, Bailey and Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a widower to his wife of 60 years, Dr. Yvette Fay Francis-McBarnette
