Obituary for Robert Lammertse

Robert John Lammertse Robert John Lammertse, age 99, died peacefully on June 24th, 2017, after a brief illness. He was a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and uncle who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Bob was born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 11, 1917, to the late Meindert and Helen Lammertse. He attended Garfield High School in Akron before graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was married to Ellen Manthey Lammertse, the love of his life, who passed away three years ago. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Moore, and an infant son, Robert (Robbie) Lammertse. Bob and Ellen lived in Akron for many years before moving to Hilton Head Island 12 years ago. They resided at The Seabrook. During his career, Bob was in charge of Anti-Skid Operations for the Wheel and Brake Division of Goodyear Aerospace Corporation, where he retired after 42 years of service. Ellen was an elementary school teacher. They lead a very active life in retirement and enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. In their Airstream trailer as well as taking many trips abroad. Bob had many hobbies, which included playing golf, bridge, pool, and pinochle; he had a lifelong interest in learning and loved attending the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra concerts and the Arts Center performances. He and Ellen were Lutheran and were very active in their churches both in Akron and Hilton Head. He is survived by daughter Barbara (Paul) Schulz, and sons Daniel (Janet Tucker) Lammertse and Thomas (Marilee Sipski) Lammertse. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Meredith, Matthew, and Evan Lammertse, and Eric and Andrew Schulz, and 3 great grandchildren, Adam, Evan, and Emily Schulz. Two of his nieces and their husbands, Susan (Keith) Wilson and Pamela (Ed) Marshall, live in the area and were very close to him as well. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 7th, at Island Lutheran Church, 4400 Main Street, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29926. Arrangements have been made by The Island Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made to Island Lutheran Church at the above address, or to Tidewater Hospice, 10 Buckingham Plantation Drive, Bluffton, S.C. 29910
