Obituary for Gilbert E Mickler

GILBERT EDWARD MICKLER COLUMBIANA - A prayer service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Gilbert Edward Mickler, 89, formerly of Youngstown, who passed away at the St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana. Gilbert was born June 25, 1928, in Youngstown, son of the late Michael Leo and Martha (Lucus) Mickler. He worked as a butcher for A & P and Bindas Sparkle Market and as an assembler erector for Wean United. He was a proud Struthers High School graduate. He served in the U.S. Army receiving the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Camp Stars. He was a member of St. Christine Church. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Struthers Post 3538, former member of the Bessemer Croatian Club golf league and Visa golf league along with the Austintown Eagles and Saxon Clubs. Gilbert is survived by three daughters, Barbara and Joseph Zabloski, Cynthia and Homer L. Skinner, both of Poland and Jane and Frank Soriano of Austintown; six grandchildren, Jennifer Zabloski, Luke and Kristen Skinner, William Skinner, Heidi Soriano and Joseph Soriano; and two great-grandchildren, Luke and Ella Skinner. In addition to his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth N. (Marrie) Mickler, whom he married on Sept. 29, 1950, and she died on July 26, 1993; an infant daughter; and his brothers, Michael and William Mickler. Calling hours will be on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be at Green Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations can be made to the St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary’s along with Hospice of the Valley for their support and care.
