Obituary for Charles Richard Henderson

C. Richard Henderson, 88, of Eastlake, passed away March 23, 2017 at Euclid Hospital. He was born July 29, 1928 in Cleveland.

Mr. Henderson was a retired Structural Iron Work Superintendent with Vogt & Conant Co. and a proud, 70 year member of Iron Workers Local 17.

He was a graduate of Harvey High School class of 1946 and attended Compton College in California.

He was a First Sargent in the US Army during the Korean War, serving as a Tank Commander and later in the US Army Ready reserves.

Mr. Henderson was active in politics throughout his life, chairing and participating in hundreds of local, state and national campaigns.

He was a member of the Eastlake Civil Service Commission. Former member of the Park and Shade Tree Commission. Former Eastlake City Councilman, Former president and member of the Willoughby Eastlake Board of Education. He is also retired from the Lake County Board of Elections. He was a former member of the Democratic State Central Committee, the former Vice Chair of the Lake County Democratic Party, a member and the former president of the Ohio AFL CIO Retirees, an associate member of the Lake County Democratic Women’s club. He is also a member of AFSME Retirees. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Willowick.


He was committed to his family and loved hosting and attending family events, which he rarely missed. He was the hub of a big and beautiful family who miss him dearly.

Survivors are his children, Charles (Diane) Henderson, Cathy (Michael Kaschak) Urbancic, Nanette (Jeffrey) Sigel, Laura Henderson, Robert (Suzanne Jonke) Henderson, Thomas (Heidi) Henderson and Jacqueline (Bill) Wratchford; grandchildren, Michael (Peggy) Henderson, Kimberly (Darin) Fowler, Nicole and Donny Urbancic, Jenny (Tom) Clinton, Jay, David, Ryan, and Corey Henderson, Thomas (Richel Stok) Henderson and Andrew Henderson; 12 loving great grandchildren; sister, Rosemary (Harry) Stevens; and sister in law, Margaret Henderson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jane Henderson; parents, James and Margaret Henderson; and his siblings, James Henderson, Marjorie “Corky” Gieroski, Patricia Carroll, John “Dinny” Henderson and David Henderson.

Funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday March 31, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 32114 Vine St., Willowick, OH 44095. Please meet at the church.

The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave, Mentor, OH 44060.

Interment will be at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, Chesterland.
